NATURE OF WORK
This position is responsible for the everyday operation of the golf course maintenance department.
This position requires the ability to supervise, administrative and computer skills. This position
also requires the use of a wide variety of equipment including various mowers, tractors, weed
eaters, trenchers, backhoes, dump trucks, and any specialty equipment required in the maintenance of
the golf course. This position must work with mechanics to ensure proper maintenance of course
equipment including oil changes, lubing, reel maintenance, engine repair and all other required
maintenance. This position also requires a pesticide applicator license and is responsible for all
fertilizer and pesticide application for the course. This position is also responsible for the
scheduling and training of the course employees as well as budgeting and tracking expenses.
Superintendent is also responsible for working with the Director to prepare the course for special
events.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for training and scheduling employee’s daily activities including Department of
Corrections Inmates.
- Responsible for scheduling and overseeing all daily maintenance activities.
- Responsible for scheduling, operation, maintenance and repair of all course equipment.
- Responsible for application or overseeing application of all fertilizers.
- Responsible for identification of pest problems and application or overseeing application of
pesticides.
- Responsible for scheduling, operation, maintenance and repair of course irrigation system.
- Responsible for budgeting and tracking expenses for course maintenance.
- Responsible for maintenance and preparation of golf cart fleet for daily play and for special
events.
- Responsible for any paperwork including chemical records, equipment records, any reports
required by director and parks director. Also responsible for working with city clerks office to
insure all paperwork is processing in a timely manner.
- Responsible for ordering or obtaining any equipment, supplies or materials necessary for the
maintenance of the course.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Associates or Bachelors Degree in Turf Management or a related field.
- Experience with golf course equipment and overall maintenance of a golf course.
- Experience working with fertilizers and pesticides.
- Experience maintaining golf course equipment.
- Supervisory experience required.
- Computer experience in data entry, word, spreadsheets and irrigation controller operation.
- Experience working with the public.
- Knowledge of soil and soil amendments.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
- Supervisory and administrative skills are required.
- Must be able to supervise and follow city policies as they pertain to the city’s utilization of
Department of Corrections work inmates.
- Must be able to work weekends, Holidays and after hours.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATES, LICENSES REQUIRED
- Must have a valid Oklahoma Drivers License and have an acceptable driving record.
- Must have or be able to obtain an Oklahoma pesticide applicator license or become a certified
applicator.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Individual must have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to handle
multiple tasks.
- Establish and maintain a working environment conducive to teamwork with City departments.
- Must be able to create working plans to keep course in acceptable if not premier golfing
conditions.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift walk and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Light or moderate
lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Must be able to perform strenuous tasks for prolonged
periods in adverse weather conditions including rain, mud, snow, ice, etc.
- Must constantly climb, stoop, kneel, crawl and bend over to lift and perform job duties.
- Must be able to climb onto and into truck, equipment and tractors.
- Must be able to effectively supervise and work with crew, give and follow oral and written
directions and provide quality playing condition and customer service.
- Must be able to work during inclement weather conditions.
- Must be able to establish and follow safety procedures.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND SAFETY CONCERNS
Major physical inconveniences and discomforts routinely present in the work situation. About 90
percent of the time individual is outdoors. Job requires individual to be aware of and observe safe
working procedures. Such hazards that are encountered include but are not limited to, noxious
odors, glass and sharp objects, diseases, hazardous materials, various wildlife, poison ivy and oak,
trees and other obstacles.
