JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Journey Lineman
DEPARTMENT: Electric
REPORTS TO: Foreman
FLSA STATUS: Non Exempt

NATURE OF WORK

This is a full journey-level experienced and trained lineman performing complex work in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical distribution lines. The incumbent exercises independent decision making in accomplishing specific assignments and works under general supervision or direction. Spends much of the time training or instructing apprentice linemen to learn skills, principles and procedures required of apprenticeship training.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Installs, operates, maintains and repairs overhead and underground electrical power lines and systems.
  2. Constructs, operates, maintains and repairs transmission and substation facilities.
  3. Handles service calls concerning power outages and electrical problems.
  4. Provides training both in book/classroom skills and on the job skills.
  5. Operates motorized equipment, uses hand tools, and performs maintenance on electrical equipment, machinery, and tools.
  6. Provides safety guidelines to other linemen as part of training and to ensure a safe work environment.
  7. May stock and service vehicles to be equipped to respond to emergency situations.
  8. May document and record data necessary for maintenance of system records, time sheets, activity sheets, etc.
  9. When on call, must be able to respond to the call location within 30 minutes.
  10. May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays for extended periods; may be required to perform duties as part of the City?s recovery force during emergencies and disasters.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.
  12. May be required to serve as a member of the City’s Contingency Response force during emergencies, work long unusual hours or shifts.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • High School graduate, GED, or equivalent experience and education and must have completed necessary requirements of a 4-year apprenticeship or equivalent program.

  • Must read and comprehend technical drawings, sketches and manuals in English.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No supervisory responsibility required.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS, LICENSES REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have completed necessary requirements of a 4-year apprenticeship or equivalent program.
  • Must possess a current Oklahoma drivers license with an acceptable driving record and must be able to obtain a Class ?B? commercial driver's license with an air brake rider (trailer) within 30 days of hire.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment in power line construction, repair, and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of electricity as applied to distribution systems is preferred. Basic knowledge of electricity.

  • Basic knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions of the line repairer trade/profession.

  • Ability to learn to climb poles with a climbing belt and hook and perform strenuous duties in all kinds of weather.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately, and under adverse conditions.

  • Must be able to make simple mathematical computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed and have capacity to learn more complex mathematical computations.


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND SAFETY CONCERNS

  • Works around hazardous equipment and electricity. Must observe safety concerns and assist other repairers to be working in safe environments.
  • Must work in all temperatures, with excessive noise from machines, jackhammers, chain saws and other equipment.
  • Work in extremes of temperature, dust, dirt and climatic conditions such as rain, sleet snow etc.
  • Work may be performed at varying heights above ground, in manholes, and/or in confined spaces

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to work with hands above head for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to walk, climb, and work from ladders, or at various heights, on uneven and slippery surfaces, performing manual/physically demanding work under unfavorable weather conditions while handling dangerous equipment or material.
  • Due to the capacity of existing equipment the weight of the incumbent should not exceed approximately 240 pounds.
  • Must not have fear of heights.
  • Must be able to lift, move and maneuver heavy weights of up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis, but moderate weights on a frequent basis.
  • Must be able to climb a power pole using climbing hooks and belt. Must be able to drive all vehicles assigned to the line crew, operate digger derrick to set poles, and use jackhammer, etc.
  • Must be capable of pulling, pushing, bending, stooping and kneeling on a frequent basis.
  • Must have sufficient eye sight to judge distances and coordination to get and use the appropriate equipment and tools and assist other line repairers.
  • Must have endurance necessary to perform these duties throughout a standard eight (8) or ten (10) hour day according to the schedule. Must be able to work long hours and overtime during holidays, emergencies, weekends, etc. Subject to call out work.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain weight restrictions for bucket truck as identified by truck manufacturer.

EQUIPMENT

Linemanƒ­s climbers and belt, hand tools, power operated tools and equipment including digger derricks, aerial lift trucks, backhoe, and similar construction equipment.
