The City of Altus abides by the International Fire Code. Section 508 FIRE PROTECTION WATER SUPPLIES gives the following guidelines for property owners/renters that have a fire hydrant on the premises.

• The fire department shall not be deterred or hindered from gaining immediate access to fire protection equipment or fire hydrants.



• The fire hydrant will be clearly visible and accessible from the street.
  • Fire hydrants are color coded to indicate the amount of water in gallons per minute that the hydrant will produce. DO NOT PAINT OR DECORATE THE FIRE HYDRANTS.


• A minimum 3-foot clear space shall be maintained around the circumference of fire hydrants.



• Growth of plants, trees, and shrubs will be considered prior to planting to ensure a 3-foot clear circumference of fire hydrants.



• Maintenance of plants, trees, and shrubs will be completed to ensure a 3-foot clear circumference of fire hydrants.



• Posts, fences, vehicles, growth, trash, storage and other materials or objects shall not be placed or kept near fire hydrants, fire department inlet connections or fire protection system.
