Altus Fire / Rescue Department is a professional
fire-rescue service in the City of Altus. The Department is composed of
32 uniformed personnel and 1 civilian employee at two fire stations
located within the City. On average, over 700 emergency calls are
responded to annually. The City has an ISO rating of 3.
Response is provided for fire and medical emergency as well as
Haz-Mat, utility emergencies, weather related events and vehicular
accidents. Response to emergency events is less than 4 minutes on
average. In addition, the Department responds to non-emergency calls
such as smoke and CO detector malfunctions, life-safety lockout,
lift assistance, Medi Flight and Air Evac approach, free smoke
detector installation and general assistance calls.
Department personnel belong to various professional organizations
such as the National Fire Protection Association, Oklahoma Fire Chiefs
Association, Oklahoma State Firefighters Association, Fire Service
Instructors of Oklahoma, Fire Marshals Association of Oklahoma,
International Association of Fire Fighters, and the Professional Fire
Fighters of Oklahoma.
When on duty, Firefighters are required to complete two hours of
classroom training and clean and inspect stations and equipment.
Throughout the year the Department cleans, paints and completes flow
testing on over 680 fire hydrants throughout the City and the Fire
Marshal/Inspector conducts over 800 business inspections.
Altus Fire / Rescue Department participates in other public
service activities including public education, station tours and
demonstrations, school visits, Career Day, F.A.R.M.
(Firefighters As Role Models), Coats for Kids, SPARKY, Firefighter
Clown Show, Salvation Army Bell Ringers, Head Start Carnival, Main
Street Altus Events (Chili Cook Off, Burn-Out Competition, Candy Cane
Cash Give-a-Way, Rock and Rumble Car Show), Operation Prom, Firefighter
Combat Challenge, Altus Public School Reading Program, City League
Sponsor, Civic Club Fire Safety Programs, Habitat for Humanity,
Farm Bureau Smoke Trailer, and Kiwanis Club Safety Town.
