2017 City Council Elections


Altus Municipal Elections are scheduled for one Councilmember for each ward 1, 2, 3, and 4.  These Councilmembers are elected by only those living in their respective ward. (They are not elected at-large or by the entire city). These are non-partisan elections filling a four (4) year term.
Qualified candidates for ward councilmembers must be at least twenty-five (25) years of age, a resident of the city for at least one (1) year preceding their election, and a resident in good faith of the respective ward from which they are elected. Councilmembers do not receive any salary; however, some training and travel expenses are covered by the City.

Those interested must file a notarized declaration of candidacy with the Election Board Office, Room 105 in the Jackson County Courthouse between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. beginning Monday, December 5, 2016, thru Wednesday, December 7, 2016.

If only one (1) candidate files in each ward, an election will not be needed.
If two (2) candidates file in any ward, then a primary election will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, to determine the councilmember that will represent that ward.
If three (3) or more candidates file in any ward, then a primary election will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, to determine the two (2) candidates that will be placed on the ballot at a general election on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.  

Again, only qualified voters of the respective ward will be eligible to vote for the representative from that ward. Refer to the City of Altus ward map to find the ward where you reside.


2017 City Clerk Elections


Municipal Elections are also scheduled for City Clerk-Treasurer.  This is also a non-partisan election filling a four (4) year term. The City Clerk-Treasurer position is elected by a majority of the registered voters of the City in an at-large (city-wide) election.

Those running for a City Clerk-Treasurer seat shall be residents and registered voters of the city.

Those interested must file a notarized declaration of candidacy with the Election Board Office, Room 105 in the Jackson County Courthouse between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. beginning Monday, December 5, 2016, thru Wednesday, December 7, 2016.

The elected city clerk shall be considered an employee of the City of Altus for all purposes including but not limited to the approved city benefits such as an annual paid salary (set by an ordinance by the City Council), vacation, sick leave and pension. The elected City Clerk shall be an employee for the purposes of the Oklahoma Governmental Tort Claims.

If only one (1) candidate files for City Clerk, an election will not be needed.
If two (2) candidates file in any ward, then a primary election will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, to determine the City Clerk.
If three (3) or more candidates file, then a primary election will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, to determine the two (2) candidates that will be placed on the ballot at a general election on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.  


Campaign Reporting & Financial Disclosure for Officials


Ethics reporting forms will be included in the election packets picked up at the Altus City Clerk’s Office.  Campaign and election information (including sign regulations) will be in the packets.

Candidates can visit the Oklahoma Ethics Commission website for campaign reporting forms and manuals, information on new required financial reporting, and disclosure for municipal candidates and elected officials.
